Lady Teal
The brief:
Milburn Boats were approached in late 2009 by a couple looking to start a new business - they wanted a hotel boat building. Built with the aim of cruising the Leeds and Liverpool canal, the boat had to be a maximum size of 60' long by 13' wide. It also needed to sleep 8 guests in 5 star comfort (+ 2 crew)
We took on the challenge and designed a hull specifically to meet the needs of this bespoke boat. With the help of Reeves Boatbuilders we came up with a design loosely based on the old Leeds & Liverpool Short boats. These have a fairly flat front (as opposed to the standard pointed narrowboat bows), and by not having a well deck we were able to make maximum use of internal space.
Milburn Boats were also challenged to fulfill Lady Teal with 4 x bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms; an 'open air' area to the Saloon; roof top 'sun deck'; underfloor heating; a Kitchen capable of commercial cooking standards.
Features:
'Lady Teal' was a challenge in supplying the running equipment to cope with the demands of a hotel boat. For example, with 4 x showers that could possible all be running at the same time, the need for a water pump that could cope required alot of research. With guests having the ability to run hairdryers, along with the other high electrical demands, a sophisticated and powerful system was needed
In order to meet these needs, Lady Teal featured:
• 90 hp Beta engine with hydraulic drive - located 2/3 of the way up the boat
• Hydraulic bowthruster
• Beta 11 kW Generator with auto start
• 5kW Victron Inverter / Charger
• 1000Ah 24v battery bank (6 x Rolls 4v batterys)
• 4 x en-suite wetrooms, with thermostatic shower mixers & Jets Toilets
• Under-floor heating - with individual controls for each guests bedroom
• Saloon featuring opening windows to front - to allow for 'open air' feel
• Webasto electrically operated 'tilt and slide' sunroof (1000mm x 1800mm) - the first to be used on an inland waterways craft. See REVIEWS page
• 2 x double guest bedrooms (with additional bunk), single guest bedroom with bunk, Crews bedroom
• Galley with Dishwasher; Range cooker; American style Fridge / Freezer; Instant boiling water tap;
• LED lighting throughout - including colour changing mood lighting to Saloon
• Bespoke made glass doors to all en-suite rooms.
The Result:
Lady Teal was a spectacular boat. When displayed at Crick Boat Show 2010, there were non-stop queues over the whole weekend for people trying to look over the distinctive boat (although the hull was not to everyones taste). Everywhere it has gone, Lady Teal continues to turn heads.
As a hotel boat, Lady Teal has been fully operational since July 2010. Take a look at the owners website to see more of what the hotel boat has to offer - maybe even book a short break? You can also see more pictures of the finished boat in our gallery
